Breakfast can take place at a Hong Kong-style cafe or a dim sum hall in the San Gabriel Valley. Not to mention the plethora of family-owned neighborhood doughnut shops and a popular bagel spot that boasts a winding line daily. Lunch options are just as varied, with pizza and sandwich options aplenty, but head to a rooftop or inviting patio to soak in the midday sunshine.

“This is probably the best burger I’ve had,” says my friend after taking one bite. While I would agree that it’s probably one of the best burgers on Kauai, it’s not the best I’ve had in Hawaii. But for diners looking for comfort food in the form of a burger, you really can’t go wrong by ordering it because it’s satisfying nonetheless. It’s a little after sunset, and I had thought evening at The Shops at Kukuiula would be the same quiet shopping center as day. I’d traveled from the urban confines of Honolulu to Kauai, the western island in our chain, to visit a new restaurant hiding in plain sight within a resort shopping center on the south side of the Garden Island. Though it wasn’t a German beer hall when it was first opened in 1959 by Ted Mandekic and Edward Pagliano, it quickly changed formats in 1963 to what you see today.

A company about three quarters of a mile below us have just finished turning the river, and they are now getting out from six to ten pounds of gold per day, but the expenses attending an undertaking of this kind are very great. There is a New York company turning the river at this bar, and when they get their dam finished, I have no doubt they will make a large amount of money. The gold is most abundant in the beds of the river, and when companies succeed in turning the stream, they almost always make fortunes. The place where we now work is called the “Oregon Bar,” from the fact that Oregon miners first found and worked on it. Some days yield much better than others; but none of them yield as abundantly as we expected.

The best spots in town boast daytime shade, evening warmth, and all-day vibes. It’s incredible to see how LA’s unique pizza culture has developed over the decades. It likely started in the early ’80s with Wolfgang Puck’s innovative smoked salmon pizza at Spago.

Even so, there is something for everyone including the breezy French bar Coucou, the iconic Hinano Cafe, or Panamian hot spot, Si! From old-school spots in Inglewood, Compton, and Lynwood to newer restaurants in View Park-Windsor Hills, and everything in between, it’s possible to dine well on dozens of different cuisines within these vibrant communities. Meander through long boulevards and land at major sports destinations like BMO Stadium to the east and SoFi Stadium to the west toward LAX. In between, go for the stacked burgers at Hawkin’s, the rib-sticking soul food at one of two locations of Dulan’s, and the crispy escovitch fish at Country Style Jamaican. Famous for its iconic pier and walkable Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica has something for everyone when it comes to restaurants. While there are plenty of tourist traps to watch out for and many places that don’t necessarily stand out, the city is chock-full of hidden gems and noteworthy destinations, too.

From bold Sri Lankan flavors at Baja Subs to homey Indonesian cooking at Medan Kitchen and flaky, buttery pastries at Borekas, dining well without having to break the bank is one of LA’s specialties. The highlight of this red-sauce spot is their singing waiters and waitresses who belt out Italian tunes between taking your order.
